“Too many children have tonsils removed unnecessarily”

BBC News recently reported on an article published in The British Journal of General Practice. In the paper the authors claim that the majority of tonsillectomies are unnecessary.

ENT UK, which represents ENT surgeons, said the profession adheres to national guidelines when deciding which patients should undergo surgery. Reasons for surgery not only include recurrent tonsillitis, but difficulty breathing and swallowing due to large tonsils.

At the ENT Clinic, we follow the national (NICE) guidelines when recommending which patients should undergo tonsillectomy, to maximise benefit and minimise risks.
