These excesses can cause Gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GORD). GORD occurs when the muscle at the bottom of the gullet (oesophagus) weakens and acid from the stomach leaks up into the oesophagus causing symptoms such as heartburn and a nasty taste at the back of the mouth.
As a result this can affect the throat, causing discomfort, swallowing difficulty and voice change.
It is possible to control the symptoms of GORD by making the following changes to your diet and lifestyle:
- Avoid eating late evening
- Avoid spicy foods
- Raise the head of the bed
- Lose weight if you are over-weight
- Reduce alcohol intake
Over-the-counter medication such as Gaviscon Advance after meals can also relieve the symptoms. If your throat symptoms persist despite these measures you should see an ENT specialist.
