Tonsillitis is an infection of the tonsils which causes a sore throat
Tonsillitis caused by streptococcal bacteria can be serious if left untreated.
Tonsillitis is an infection of the two lymphoid glands called tonsils, which are located at the back of the throat on each side. The tonsils form part of the immune system and help fight infection. However they can become infected by common viruses or bacteria. Tonsillitis can affect all ages. For the majority of people, it settles within a few days without any specific treatment.
If the tonsillitis is caused by a virus, then rest, paracetamol and plenty of fluids are required. If it is due to a bacterial infection, then antibiotics might be necessary.
If you experience frequent episodes of tonsillitis, you may need to have your tonsils removed. This operation is known as a tonsillectomy.
Generally, a tonsillectomy will be considered if you have suffered regular tonsillitis which is impacting your health and work.
