The voice changes because the vocal cords in the voice box are not working normally
If the voice change persists for more than two weeks, it is important to see an ENT specialist to check the vocal cords.
There is usually not a serious cause for voice change and in most cases the voice returns to normal within a few days. Causes can include, viral upper respiratory infection (e.g. cold), vocal overuse, acid reflux, nodules/polyps, smoking, reduced movement vocal cord and tumours.
Initial treatment involves voice rest, drinking plenty of water and avoiding alcohol and smoking/vaping.
If the voice change persists and an ENT specialist has ruled out a serious cause, Voice therapy with a speech therapist is often advised.
