Impacted ear wax and infected ear debris can be effectively removed with
ear microsuction
Wax-softening ear drops (e.g. sodium bicarbonate or olive oil) should be used daily for at least one week to treat wax impaction before ear microsuction.
Whilst lying on a couch or sitting in a chair, a microscope is used to visualise the ear canal.
The wax or debris is removed using a small suction tube. The procedure usually takes no more than a few minutes. It is safer than ear syringing, as it is performed under direct vision with no water irrigation.
Occasionally, it may be advised to continue using wax-softening ear drops if there is hard wax deep in the ear canal which cannot be completely removed at the first visit. In this case, it may be necessary to remove the remaining wax one to two weeks later.
